Background of the study:
Cultural practices surrounding menstruation in Ohafia have long influenced adolescent reproductive health. These practices, which include taboos, rituals, and social restrictions, are deeply embedded in the community’s heritage and significantly affect young girls’ health behaviors (Ibe, 2023; Uzo, 2024). Such cultural norms often determine how menstruation is perceived and managed, impacting access to health information and modern sanitary products (Ekwueme, 2023). Adolescent girls may experience psychological and physical stress as a result of these culturally imposed practices, leading to potential reproductive health complications (Ndukwe, 2025). Researchers have observed that a lack of culturally appropriate health education exacerbates these challenges, limiting the adoption of effective reproductive health practices (Okafor, 2023). Addressing these cultural determinants is essential to foster better health outcomes, enhance self-care, and empower young girls with accurate knowledge regarding their reproductive health.

Statement of the problem:
Despite efforts to promote adolescent reproductive health, harmful cultural practices surrounding menstruation persist in Ohafia. These practices contribute to misinformation, stigmatization, and inadequate health management among adolescents. The challenge is to reconcile traditional beliefs with modern health education to mitigate adverse outcomes (Ibe, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To investigate cultural practices surrounding menstruation in Ohafia.
  2. To assess the impact of these practices on adolescent reproductive health.
  3. To develop culturally sensitive educational interventions.

Research questions:

  1. What cultural practices influence menstruation in Ohafia?
  2. How do these practices affect adolescent reproductive health?
  3. What educational interventions can reconcile cultural beliefs with modern health practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Cultural practices significantly affect menstrual management among adolescents.
  2. These practices contribute to adverse reproductive health outcomes.
  3. Culturally sensitive education will improve reproductive health practices.

Significance of the study:
This study highlights the need for culturally tailored reproductive health education in Ohafia. Findings will inform policymakers and educators on integrating traditional practices with modern health interventions to promote adolescent well-being (Uzo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining cultural practices surrounding menstruation and their effect on adolescent reproductive health in Ohafia Local Government. It does not extend to other regions or age groups.

Definitions of terms:

  • Menstruation practices: Cultural rituals and norms associated with the menstrual cycle.
  • Adolescent reproductive health: Health issues and management specific to adolescents.
  • Culturally sensitive interventions: Health education approaches that respect and incorporate traditional beliefs.
